I know plenty of such people. Making a decent living takes drive and initiative. Some doors will be closed, but there are also tons of opportunities for people who make their own luck. I wouldn't advise dropping out of college, per se, but it is only one path and it is not for everyone.

I dropped out of college in 1972. Back then, jobs were plentiful, with or without a college degree. A person could work his way up through the ranks without anybody paying much attention to their educational attainments. I did very well, earning top five figures at the end of my career and retired at 57. Times have changed. A college degree nowadays is pretty much required for most professional entry level jobs, but still has little value. With so few jobs and so many applicants, employers can require a college degree even though it has nothing to do with the job. Add to that the high cost of a college education. It's a dilemma. I'm glad I don't have to face right now. If I were a young person again today, I would seriously consider some sort of trade school as opposed to college. Culinary school, plumbing, electricity, carpentry, health care etc - all are and will be in demand for the foreseeable future.

I agree that I'm exceptional, but I try to not let it go to my head.

Actually, I spend the day going about my business and at the same time thinking about these scintillating topics, formulating replies in my mind, and then I speed touch-type them.
