The Detroit public school system has been ordered to close half its schools to make up for a $327 million deficit. The schools will be shuttered over the next four years, causing class sizes to bulge to 60.
This is actually quite interesting. A co-worker and I was discussing this earlier. He was making a big deal out of it but after doing research this is not the only place this is happening. The same is going on in NYC and Kansas City. I hate to say it but there are a lot of areas who do not value the education their kids receive and would much rather put something else ahead of it. I'm sure there were other alternatives to make up for the deficit but maybe closing schools was the easier choice. None of this helps our economy at all because for all the schools closing there will be people losing jobs. SUCKS!!!
It was a real stretch to call them "schools" anyway.
(I wish we had a sad thumbs up. The smile doens't fit)
I think Detroit needs to close their schools and send the infrastructure dollars and per pupil dollars to the suburban schools that accept them. Detroit schools should be responsible for one thing and only one thing. Bussing their kids to better districts. Fortunately, Michigan has lost so many families, many schools outside of Detroit have openings.
The Detroit school system is so broke there is no fixing it. They, certainly, will not fix what ails Detroit by going to 60 students per class at the high school level as planned!!!! One teacher cannot control 60 kids at one time and expect to teach them anything in a 60 minute session. Seriously, you might as well not send your kids to school at all if you live in Detroit. They can, probably, get a better education watching PBS at home.
