I made the mistake of signing up to drive my school's jv softball team to a tournament today. why a mistake? well it lasted 9 hours and well jv softball isn't the most entertaining sport to me personally. besides that i did get paid 90 bucks to do it so it's all good.
the issue of the day.
first game they got beat 17-1. third game they got beat 26-1. now you're probably saying man how about some let up from the opposition. well the second game was 45-0!!!!!! this is jv softball people. NFL head coaches aren't even that bad at running up a score against arch rivals.
i'm glad our school's jv coach is a polite young man b/c if it we're me i'd had a few choice words with the opposing head coach.
what's the value here for either side? none that I could see. to their credit the girls played hard the entire day and didn't get negative with each other nor did our coach who again is a very polite, christian young man.
They should stop the game when there is a such a large point lead in baseball/softball. Leading by 15 going into the 7th? Game over. Leading by 30 ever...game over.
The only value here is showing the beaten coach and team how bad they are.
having not a whole of experience with high school softball i discovered today that at these multi game / single day tournaments that they play 5 innings and if the score gets over 15 runs in terms of a differential then they stop it after 3. needless to say i was shocked the opposing coaches in the last 2 games didn't tell their kids to hold up. they were literally stealing bases and trying to get walked even with a 30 run lead. kinda pathetic IMO.
Athletes should feel that sting of a humiliating loss, especially in this era of "well at least you tried".
Now, on the other side of the coin, I would hope that the winning coach did the decent thing and pulled his best players out and didn't deliberately try to run the score up just to twist the screws a little tighter.
It's tough with softball because you generally don't have a second or third string to put on the field so you are always playing your starters. While blowouts are not fun, the other team came to play the game too and should be allowed to practice their skills as well. It's tough from both sides.
Our schools have a "mercy" rule, at least for softball. Once there is a 10 or more run difference and it is beyond the 3rd inning, after the home team bats, the game is called.
It is kind of pointless to continue with a game that is so one sided. Now if the teams want to continue in a scrimmage situation, that would be between the coaches,
It sends a worse message to both teams to intentionally make outs. I wouldn't like stealing bases with that big of a lead, but kids should play hard the whole game regardless of the score. The mistake was on the part of your own coach for entering his team in a tournament that was too far above their level of play.
Most tournaments sign-up for the teams are before the season even starts. So the coach has no idea how good his/her team may be. Also its JV, Maybe the Varsity had a big graduation year last year with its season, and took more of the 'good' player then normal from the JV. So the JV team is weaker then normal.
It maybe 'we allways' go to it.
But the other coachs should have held back when the lead became so big, The tournament need to re-look at it rules to end such games before they get that bad.
