Our Middle School electives are:
art
band
chorus
business and computer science
engineering and technology
family and consumer sciences
orchestra
general music
Art
Band
Choir
Computer apps
Technology/engineering
Foreign language is required through 7th, the 8th graders can take if they want
Gym and health are required
Then it gets a bit more specific by department - ie there's no general 'art' class, but the kids can choose from drawing/painting, ceramics, 3-D art, art metals, and so on; web page design, computer animation, digital video production, Google apps, etc. as their computer electives. I don't think my kids realize how fortunate they are to have all these options!
I would really push for a foreign language. It's so important in the world today. Our only choices in junior high were Orchestra, Band, Chorus, Woodshop, and Journalism.

It sounds like your school is more academically/vocationally oriented. Web design and computer animation are lucrative job skills. And engineering/technology, also very practical, and a good preparation for college engineering. That's an impressive school you've got!

I agree. The principal is usually pretty open to new ideas, and the one that myself and another teacher were talking about pushing for is Spanish.
The problem we have is that we are a minority-majority school and we don't exactly have a lot of money to burn. Most extra dollars that we do have ends up going to pay for teachers to give extra help to kids in math and language arts.
Anyone ever heard of middle schools offering basic engineering classes to kids at this age level?
Ours has two they offer to the 8th graders, one of which gives a high school credit for them.
