BALTIMORE (AP) — Johns Hopkins University mistakenly sent nearly 300 applicants welcome messages when they were actually rejected or deferred, and now the school has issued an apology.

University officials told The Washington Post (Johns Hopkins mistakenly says) it was a mistake of human error. Vice Provost David Phillips said a contractor who works with Johns Hopkins on electronic communications pulled a wrong list of emails.

This is a horrible mistake. I agree with the parent in the article in that this kind of error warrants a phone call. Perhaps, a refund on the application fee as well.

It seems that this mistake happens at least once a year at some major university/college. At the end of the day, I think a letter of apology suffices. And if those students had Johns Hopkins worthy grades (note, plenty of people with grades to get into these schools don't get in simply due to a limited number of seats for admission), then they'll be fine in the long-term. Cheer up and move on.
