It honestly depends. Sometimes they cancel school for about 4 inches, some days we go to school with about 6 inches of snow.

I didn't read all the responses so I don't know if anyone spoke up for NC. We close based on a FORECAST of snow; however, it is my understanding they do not have many plow trucks and no salt trucks here.

Originally from Chicago and I remember going to school when the snow piles were taller than us. ;-)

We've now had 25 ft of snow this winter & not one day off from school. But I do see some of the students taking their own snow day when I am skiing on the slopes.

comparing metro areas to rural areas is apples to oranges.

You don't get the full effect of blowing and drifting in a metro area as you do in a rural area.

School busses running in a metro residential area vs a rural area is apples to oranges.
