Two New Orleans high school students make a presentation to a math society conference. They were the only high school students. Their presentation? Their presentation showing that the famous Pythagorean theorem could be proven with trigonometry without circular logic. The students were offered the chance to submit their findings for peer review of mathematicians around the world. It’s inspirational that some students in such a high crime city where the young are enticed by a life of drugs, alcohol, and crime; these students are working to excel in academic studies to such a high level.

The girls are students at St Mary's, founded by the Sisters of the Holy Family shortly after the Civil War ended. The SSF are a black Catholic order founded in the antebellum days. It shows that people can triumph over adversity. Also that adversity it still alive and well in America.

Not long ago some made claims that math is racist. Math isn’t racist. Some racist make claims black people are stupid especially when it comes to academics. They aren’t, as a race, stupid. Individuals can be stupid or ignorant. In this case they have so far succeeded in rising up above the negative temptations of the city and culture of New Orleans. Math is a great start towards a career. I hope their efforts are rewarded with an Ivy League university education.

Those are excuses made by the very people running a failed public education system.
There's also a charter school in Harlem NYC where Black students are excelling in grades.
And the mayor tried to shut them down.

Congratulations to these two brilliant young Black women, and may they go on to do well in life.
But please, let's temper the criticism and description of NOLA. The "enticements" noted in the bolded are not something unique to that city. Not by a long shot. We can all applaud these girls without trashing New Orleans or the people who live there.

While such temptations are available in other major cities,…how many of those cities are famous for alcohol in the way New Orleans is famous? The city itself isn’t very large and many are contained within very small pocket communities. I live in South Louisiana and would not return to New Orleans except to visit the WW2 museum again. Sadly, last time I visited the museum, the intersections outside the museum were homeless encampments. Speaking with people I know who live there,…it’s only gotten worse thanks to the current mayor. The best thing children of New Orleans can do is get an education for the opportunity to flee the city.
