One of the things I like best about bulletin boards is that I learn things about different parts of the country. Sometimes what I think is normal and that EVERYONE does is, in fact, something that is only done in my area.

My question is - Does your school district and/or state offer full day kindergarten? For free?

I'm in Lehigh County, PA and our school district only has 1/2 day kindergarten.

In Chesapeake, VA we have 1/2 day kindergarten. IMO, I think this is an outdated concept for 21st century schooling. I send my kindergartner to a private, full day school instead. In the counties just north of us (Norfolk and Portsmouth, VA) they have full day kindergartens. We are all in the same metro region. If my county offered full day public kindergarten, I would certainly send him there. I love the school system in which we are located, minus that 1/2 day concept!

There was another thread about full/half day kindergarten here somewhere a week or so ago. We have half day (four hour day) kindergarten in our town. I think the cities here all have full day kindergarten. We've tried both (moving halfway through the school year, and going from full to half day kindergarten) and I found the kids in half day kindergarten to be at the same learning level as those in full day kindergarten. Longer days made no difference academically. After experiencing both, I prefer half day. And kindergarten here is free, it's preschool that parents in most towns must pay for.

I think this is the thread you mean: http://www.city-data.com/forum/educa...alf-day-k.html but it was asking what was a 1/2 day kindergarten, not quite the same question.

Around here (SE FL) we have full day K. The school day is the same for K-5th grade. We have free pre_K and K.

Prince William County, VA schools are now all with full day K. Fairfax County Schools, VA have some full day, some half day. They are working towards making all schools full day K, but it is very expensive, so the process has slowed.

I don't know about our entire county, but our town has full day K. They started the full day program as a test 3 years ago and there was just something in the paper about them keeping it that way. I don't think it is our whole county though. I am pretty sure that one of the neighboring towns has both half and full as an option.

Oh, it is free unless you opt for a private school. In one of the local towns, public preschool is free too.

Due to high stakes testing in Texas, most schools are moving to or have moved to full day kindergarten.
