I think the idea of letting students make up work in the summer was a noble one but nowadays its just another way we enable kids. I'm starting to see way too many students (especially in HS) who **** away 4 to 5 months of a school semester and then feel they'll just make it up in 4 weeks in the summer. I know it is a way for teachers to make extra cash but to me its just a way to reward students who made life miserable for teachers from Sept through June. Simply put, its time to can it!

My school district Charges HS kids for summer school, ES (3 & 5) and MS (8) who fail the state tests can go for summer school makeup classes free, but any High School Kids to need to take summer school have to pay for the class(s). They can just (All schools) show up on the re-test day on last day of summer school and take the test if they want for free. I understand that the HS does give wavers to some kids who need to make up classes for 'extenuated' reasons.

Please clarify that you mean for remedial and not enrichment purposes. That is what you mean isn't it?

I get your point. I have had students who do nothing all year, but go to summer school and get passed on. Many kids are smart enough to know that they can sleep through the year, come for 6 weeks, and pass. The fact that my school has a/c also probably makes summer school more appealing. I think teacher recommendations for summer school should be used- I have kids who've tried very hard, and should have the opportunity to spend the summer improving. I have a couple kisd who've done nothing all year and should repeat the grade.

In my school there is no summer school option. Additionally, if you fail either a science or tech class you have to go back to your home high school there is no repeating the year. No exceptions.

In our school they offer classes for kids that can't fit or what additional classes on their transcript for college (like advanced math classes and advanced science classes). They do offer make up classes for failed required courses only-no elective offerings for failing. Our twins are taking honors Geometry this summer and will graduate with 5 years, at least, of high school math as a result. Our oldest did this as well.

Thats a cool idea. In my area there is no summer school for enrichment. My daughter took marine biology at the local community college last year but for the past two years she has taken 2 maths each year (one as an elective) during the year. She will be in Calc 2 next year as a junior but it would be better if she could have taken those classes in the summer instead of just surfing.

Actually, we don't need to do away with it. We need to make it harder than the regular class Then maybe students wouldn't figure that it was just easier to do credit recovery.

Here, students get to sit in front of a computer, watch little cartoon animations that teach the concepts and then take little tests (a bite at a time) until they pass. They can get credit for an entire semester in just a couple of weeks. So why bother trying in class? It's easier to just do credit recovery.

I don't think we need to do away with it. I think we need to make it hard enough that it's not the choice they want.

If that is all they are offering then yes, they need to make it harder. Here the make up classes run from the first day of summer vacation to about 2 weeks before school starts up again in the fall. Classes go from 8-11 or 1-4. They do cram a full year into the summer but they go for 3 hours/ day. The summer enrichment classes are 6 weeks long from 8-11 but they have homework sessions from 7-8 and 11-12 so most kids go from 8-12 and then don't have to worry about homework.

Back in my day summer school was a horrible stigma. No one wanted to be one of 'those kids', so we did whatever we had to do to pass the class and avoid having to ruin our summer repeating it. Kids' attitudes sure have changed since then.

A lot of districts have canned it anyway due to budget cuts.
