I'm always amazed at how many of my high school students claim to not know where their parents work.

Why do you need to know where they work? Do you plan to call them in the middle of the day to vent? You have all the information you need on your student informaiton card, or whatever its called. Many people are cagey about broadcasting their personal business, including students. You don't need to know where they work, just worry about where you work! Learn to respect others privacy, just because you're a teacher doesn't mean you have the right to know all a student's private business!
