I remember, when I was like 14, my friend used to have this old busted Delta, it was primer gray, had new tires, but no hubcaps, just old ugly black rims, not nice rims, just the basic rims all cars used to have, that went covered by a hubcap. Even though this car was hooptie, every Saturday we would clean it up, vacuum it, put a brand new "pine tree air freshener in it" and go cruizing to the Kmart on Mcrae [that was the spot back in the day] One particular day, we ran out of Armorall, ofcourse no one had money to go get more,so guess what we decided to do....One of my friends got the bright idea to put coke [Coka Cola] on the tires, and suprisingly it made them shine!! lol So we were chilling with some girls, and all of a sudden, a bunch of flys started bombarding us, they were all over our tires, the girls were like yuuuk!!! and needless to say, we didnt have dates that night! What was worst, is that it got really windy later on in the night, the next day the tires were all full of dirty and flys....lol [i remember that was around the time, u copuld pitch in a dollar each and with 10 bucks u had a half tank]

Levow,

That's not poor. I grew up in a New York City ghetto and when I was 15 I had one pair of jeans and one pair of sneakers with holes in the bottom. That's poor.

That's not that bad -- a lot of college graduates today have $30,000 in debt. I was always in the black working my way through college. For some reason I had more spare cash then than I do today -- oh yeah -- I didn't have kids then.

I hit rock bottom when I left the Navy in 85, I was still on the wildside despite all the military dicipline, being independant from the rest of my family did'nt even care to work in the family business, collected a monthly Naval reserve check and foodstamps, the hell with this I said, moved to the bay area since I was familiarized with this place thanks to the Navy got me a good job and financially I hav'nt looked back ever since, I knock on wood and I thank God for my blessings.

I was homeless for 2 months in Boise Idaho with 3 kids and a wife all living out of a small compact car.. had one Realtor black list us and no one would rent to us in the entire city. That was several years ago, and I have to say not fun. So I know what lows feel like.

I was like 20before I went to bk not joking we never eat out.
x-mas was cloths, stuff we needed not wanted, brithday new shoes for school and a homemade cake, being so poor that you do not know you were poor till you are grown!!but we were happy kids, we only eachother and wanted not much.my kids want all the time!! last week told my son no at the store he said we must be poor!! I laugh at him because he does not know what poor is! I have shared some of my childhood with him and he just sits there shocked and then ask"mom were you sad growing up?' I am like are you kidding me those were some of the best times of my life!! he does not understand.
so I was so poor that I did not know it for 20years!!

I liked that post Levow, that reminds me of the time I saw my brother using cooking oil on his tires to make them shine and it worked but made the dirt stick to them pretty good.
