Overnight Leader: How Romney Should Pick a VP | Fox Business (July 25th)

Romney’s initial laundry list of possible candidates, among others, include, in no particular order: Chris Christie, Rick Santorum, Patrick Toomey, Jeb Bush, Jim DeMint, Nikki Haley, Mike Huckabee, Bobby Jindal, Bob McDonnell, Rand Paul, Marco Rubio, Condoleezza Rice, John Thune, Tim Pawlenty, Paul Ryan, Mitch Daniels, Rob Portman, Susana Martinez and Brian Sandoval.

Condoleezza Rice Still Not Interested In VP Slot - ABC News (July 13th)
For her part Rice has repeatedly and consistently maintained that she not only doesn’t want to be VP, she doesn’t want to run for any elected office.
*************
Why do they keep attaching her name to him? It's like some of her cool will rub off or something. I'd vote for Condi for prez. In a New York minute. She smart, witty, calm and when she talks, she makes sense. The thing is, Fox is saying Romney is looking to pick someone who doesn't want the job. They're saying he's uninfomed about his own candidate choices. How can you be looking at someone to be your running mate, and they just want to be a professor at Stanford?

The great thing about the Romney VP topic is that no one really knows anything and thus can do what people do best--go in to full bs, make s**t up mode. The 'experts' said that the pick could be as soon as last Friday, which has come and gone. I heard a purported 'smart guy' say yesterday that it definitely would not be Portman, that it would probably would be someone not being discussed. He suggested the name Mike Huckabee. I doubt it--just google Huckabee+Clemmons.

I still think having Rice would almost guarantee a win on Nov 6 but it's anybody's guess as to whether she would accept. On one hand she's been vociferous in her denials, OTOH why did shoe go to the the recent Utah event and give a wow 'em speech if she is so deadset against it?

Based upon your link I feel absolutely certain that Fredrick Douglas won't be a candidate.

He needs to pick someone who has been fully vetted and has the conservative base in full support of her. That would be Sarah Palin. She could boost Romneys chances by being a fierce attacker, something McCain held her from doing in 08.

Another name that never comes up is David Petraeus. He is a Republican, would bring the foreign policy cred that Romney lacks, amazing life story, PhD from (IIRC) Princeton. Perhaps could be talked into jumping into politics on the grounds that all the work, sacrifice, and blood expended in Iraq and Afghanistan is being frittered away.

Plus David Petraeus once ran a 2:50 marathon, the fastest time of any US political figure of which I'm aware. Next fastest was Rod Blagojevich at 3:03. Others: W Bush @ 3:44, Sarah Palin @ 3:59, and Al Gore @4:58.

Mitt is only floating Rice's name to make it look like he'd be open to a woman and a black on his ticket. In fact, he is not interested in a female VP or a black. How would that fit in with his Anglo-Saxon ideal of America that he's been talking about in England?

Which would make him only slightly less exciting than Romney.

Petraeus would be an interesting choice, and as you say, would add the missing foreign policy piece to the campaign. He might also enable Romney and the GOP in general to "reframe" the lingering negative associations between Iraq and Dubya... except I doubt that's something Republicans are quite ready to deal with (yet), especially as already evidenced by Bush's rather conspicuous absence from the upcoming Convention. Plus adding Petraeus (or Rice) also plays to the Dem narrative that "Romney is simply Bush on Steroids", and changes the GOP dynamic from 'anybody but Obama', back to 'anybody but Bush'!
