Most people don't realize a tie between Obama and Romney could be a likely scenario. Here is how it can happen. Basically If Obama wins the 2004 John Kerry states and win Ohio and New Mexico a tie would occur.

STATES WON:

Romney:

Idaho
Nevada
Utah
Montana
Arizona
Colorado
Wyoming
Montana
Alaska
North Dakota
South Dakota
Nebraska
Kansas
Oklahoma
Texas
Iowa
Missouri
Arkansas
Louisiana
Mississippi
Alabama
Florida
Georgia
Tennessee
North Carolina
South Carolina
Kentucky
Virginia
West Virginia
Indiana

TOTAL: 269

Obama:

Washington State
Oregon
California
New Mexico
Minnesota
Wisconsin
Illinois
Michigan
Ohio
Hawaii
Pennsylvania
New York
Maine
Vermont
New Hampshire
Massachusetts
Connecticut
Rhode Island
New Jersey
Delaware
Maryland
Washington DC

TOTAL: 269

If this scenario takes place, The speaker of the house selects the president and the senior majority leader in the senate selects the vice-president.

Since John Boehner is the speaker of the house and a republican, naturally he would select Romney to be president. Since Harry Reid is the senior majority leader in the senate he would naturally select a democrat for Vice President. Paul Ryan would be out of it. If this happens Harry Reid could keep Joe Biden but if wanted to really screw the GOP he could select Obama as vice president and Obama could still run for 2016.

Naahhh. It ain't gonna happen. This race is not going to be that close. Obama's political machine will make sure those ballot boxes are stuffed to the gills. I don't know why we are even holding an election.

Let's just hope it would not be settled in a drinking competition. Obama would kill Romney.

PS- PA, OH, and WI will go Romney, so such a scenario is very unlikely.

I think you are right. Medicare in Florida will hurt Romney.

Iowa, which almost always votes democratic for president, will go Romney. MANY Obama voters in the state are very vocal about not voting for him again. His shine has worn off here. I would very much doubt that Obama will win Virginia as well.

The Speaker of the House does not select the president.

What happens if it is a tie or no one has a majority...is that it goes to the house where each state has 1 vote.

For example, Michigan has 15 Representatives in the House...8 Republican and 7 Democratic, if they vote along party lines you'd expect 8 for Romney and 7 for Obama = Michigan's 1 vote goes to Romney and so on.

As of right now, the Republicans hold about a 2 to 1 advantage if this vote were to happen, but it would be the incoming House.

Additionally, Harry Reid would not pick the VP, the incoming Senate would...the Republicans might just win that...

Iowa is going to Obama. People there are moderates. Romney and Ryan are too far to the right. Obama is still doing well in Virginia.

Oh yes you are correct Michigan Moon the entire congress would have to vote.

The last time a "contingent election," as it's known, occurred was 1824.
After the unresolved presidential election of 1824, when none of the four candidates achieved an Electoral College majority, the House met the following January to decide the outcome.
After a good bit of politicking from all the candidates, the House awarded the presidency to John Quincy Adams, even though Andrew Jackson had won the most electoral votes.

Plausible but I don't see Romney winning Florida and losing Ohio, Pennsylvania and other Midwest states.

Iowa is over 80% white and Obama is doing worse among whites now than any other candidate since Carter. I doubt Iowa will be much different. He will lose Iowa.
