The worst thing that could happen to the dems would be if the reps gave some ground on a number of largely meaningless social issues.

I don't normally ascribe to conspiracy theories, but after observing the needless, almost Quixotian flagellation of the GOP's extreme right flank in all this, I can't help but think there have been some closed door strategy meetings between the Jim Dement's, Jim Jordan's, Ted Cruz's, etc. to create a third party. Since their early competition for voters will be from the GOP, their first play from scrimmage right now is to destroy the Republican brand. That is the only logical explanation I can see from the way the extreme right is acting right now.

Conservative talk radio wants to "defund" the GOP/

I don't know what will happen to the GOP, but anything that Ann Coulter or Lumbaugh promote will likely be no better. They are congenital narcissists.

Maturation? Seems more like dementia to me.

Not as long as evangelicals control the right.

The evangelicals have nowhere else to go. Just like the black vote, the environmental vote, the gay vote etc.

It just takes the right politician to pee down their back while telling them it's raining.

Thanks for the votes suckers.

Some perspective.

First off, intra-party struggles invariable lead to cries (from the disaffected) of "Third party!".

And, certainly, the GOP has issues right now. The demographics at the Presidential level are daunting for them, they can't compete in the Senate, and their lead on the House is tenuous and does not reflect the national vote.

That said, the issues the GOP faces are not existential.

You want to see a party at its nadir? I give you 1936.

When the dust from that race settled, the Republican Party had won all of two states in the Presidential race - and that was the least of their problems. When the new Congress was sworn in in January 1935, the Democrats held a House majority of 334-88 (along with 8 Progressive Party and 5 Farmer-Labor members, who all caucused with the Democrats) and a Senate majority of 69-25 (along with 2 Progressive Party and 1 Farmer-Labor members who, again, all caucused with the Democrats).

Now, it took 10 years for the GOP to win either house of Congress again (they won both in 1946) and 16 years to recapture the White House. The point is, the Republicans recovered. The party survived. And it will survive this time, by doing what parties have always done - adapting. It won't be pretty and it won't happen overnight. But it will happen, eventually.

Such are the cycles of politics.

LOL

The GOP is not less popular, their appeal is just becoming more selective.

Well, of course. These days, you basically need to despise anything and everything that isn't within the confines of some 1950's utopian ideal of what America ought to be. Any slight variation, and you are out!

Thus, you'll be hard-pressed to find a Democrat on sites like Stormfront...
