That echo chamber doesn't hold water in Texas, where there are more conservatives of all colors of the rainbow see differently, with The States push to eliminate illegal aliens.
Only the democrat controlled big cities, that rely the most on illegal aliens to do all the work that is beneath them to do, are the places pushing to allow them to remain illegal and stay, so they can exploit them even further. To do the miserable work, their elite stature will not let them perform.

He is a Progressive Flip-Flopper and former Democrat. He goes with what ever is the most popular that day. Regardless if it is 180º for his previous breeze on his ass.
He could not have made it in Texas politics as a democrat after the Reagan Era.

Which does not negate the fact that he is currently elected as a Republican. He isnt a City democrat as you claimed of immigration reform supporters. Even worse, you are saying the people of your party are that easily fooled by a (former)Democrat.
