I think we are looking at this incorrectly. If we view Trump's campaign as an actual bid for president, it looks ridiculous. If we view this as a narcissist attempting to gain followers to meet his need for cult like devotion, he is successful. Seriously, his supporters here will do or accept anything he tells them. It's a small segment of the population, but for a narcissist, this devotion is like heroin to an addict. He needs it, and he has convinced them that they need him.
Now this campaign will really get started. You thought he got started when he became the presumptive nominee, or during the convention, or right after the convention, but no. This is it. This is where he's really going to get serious and let Hillary have it.

Or... maybe it will be next week.
Is that sarcasm? If it is, you will need to spell it out. As Trump pointed out, his followers lack the intellectual capacity to understand it.

If Donald Trump and a heroin addict were in a room with one door, and on the other side of the door was both a hypodermic needle full of heroin and a xenophobic white-nationalist audience, and the first one to the door got the prize of his choice on the other side?
I don't know about you, but my money's on Trump to win that race!

Yeah I don't get the head of Breitbart. What exactly his hiring does for the campaign is beyond me. KellyAnne Conway has experience as a strategist at least. Still, she is well less experience in Presidential campaigns than Manafort. Another article I read said he felt boxed in the last few weeks. Perhaps he wants people close that don't reign him in as much. I'm also guessing that their internal polls are showing the same as the ones we are seeing. Because otherwise there would be no need for yet another campaign shakeup.
There's an article by Leon Wolf over on RedState that basically agrees with what you wrote, it seems that Trump only wants to surround himself with "yes men" who agree with whatever he says and let's him do & say whatever.
In short, Trump is doubling down on stupid and ignorance. This wont fix his falling poll numbers in the least.
