Republican Congressman Robert Pittenger of NC-09 was the 1st Incumbent to lose this cycle losing in a Primary to Pastor Mark Harris. Pittenger was first elected in 2012 and seeking his 4th term was almost knocked off by Harris in the 2016 Primary. Harris is a staunch social conservative and a founding member of Vote for Marriage, NC spearheading the effort to ban same-sex marriage in North Carolina.
The district covers portions of South Charlotte and its eastern suburbs along with more rural areas in the south central portion of the state along the South Carolina border. Trump won the district by just under 12 points, but does have a strong Democratic challenger in Dan McCready who has a strong $$ advantage.
