Gavin Newsom and Ron DeSantis aren't just avatars for the different futures of their parties, but also for the separate realities blue and red Americans are living in -- two people of opposing viewpoints looking at the exact same set of facts and coming to vastly different conclusions. They're both governors, rising stars and speculated soon-to-be presidential candidates, building out micro-ideological models in their sunny capitals.
In ever-blue California, Newsom, the son of a state appellate judge, has rebooted from his start as a flashy progressive hero around quieter legislative pushes. Meanwhile, in reddening Florida, there's DeSantis, the son of a Nielsen box salesman, who in public cleaves less to his two Ivy League degrees than to the anti-elitist, reactionary politics that have consumed the GOP.
Newsom now is going on the air against DeSantis in Florida -- with what he says is not the first ad of the 2024, or even the 2028, presidential race -- with the goal of trying to get Democrats to reclaim a sense of collective identity that could enable them to beat Trumpism in the long term.
Talk about 2 candidates that couldn't be further apart in their thinking.
We all thought in 2016 that it was going to be a pivotal race that could decide the fate of the country and luckily enough of us dared to take a chance. We felt the same way in 2020 and we were slapped in the face and told to sit down and shut up. 2024 is going to be a real showdown if Desantis and Newsom square off. The fate of the country will hang in the balance. It is crazy how opposed we have become. Do we really want America to resemble the shambles that is California?
Newsom needs to be traded to China for a leaf monkey, not running for any sort of office here. He'd definitely be a better fit in the Chinese political scene. He showed what he was made of (brown and stinky) during covid.
I'm not always sure how I feel about the guy, but DeSantis would be the obvious choice in this scenario.
It probably wouldn't be close based on how people are voting with their feet.
Can't remember the last time I heard someone, in person, say they wanted to move to California. Newsom inherited a mess and has made it even worse.
Then you have the social extremism that the average person wants no part of, and Newsom embraces that as well.
One would like to think that running two candidates largely considered by the other party to be nutjobs would usher in some kind of change in how we develop and push candidates, but we all know it won't.

The country will survive, or at least two countries. I do think we are headed for a split into two countries but I don't think who wins in 2024 will not have much effect on that.
Newsome has NO SHOT to win the presidency ---- not without major fraud.
You know -- 2020 style fraud. Illegals voting, mail in voting without voter ID, Dominion voting systems that nobody seems to be able to figure out, democratic / blue states stopping vote counts in the middle of the night.
Don't forget the possibility of another 'pandemic'.
That's the wild card, the fly in the ointment, the elephant in the room.
I know.... lefty says 2020 was the 'most secure election in history'.

Newsome is the only nationally known Democrat who is old enough to be President, but still under 70, and not wearing Depends.
3,300,000 voters in his own State tried to run him out of office, but their 36% wasn't enough.
He'd probaby win Cali and a few more uber leftist states, but no more.
DeSantis would beat Newsom soundly....the centrists and moderate Dems have seen enough madness & destruction from the Uber Left.
