The REQUIREMENT should be on those who come to this country - learn ENGLISH.

Including illegals, but of course that won't happen.
And inclusing legals!!! Some legals can't even speak one word of English...they better make me a citizen because I can speak and write English...maybe some grammar mistakes, but it is so strange to me that citizens can't speak English....it should be a requirement to become a citizen.

Not only is this thread an idiotic waste of time, there's one that's already been going in the main Politics forum.

I'm bilingual. I speak English and Spanish. My parents were born and raised in Cuba. My use of Spanish has quadrupled in recent years because of the influx of Hispanics but English is my first and favorite tongue to both speak and write.

I think it will become necessary at some point in the future for Americans to speak some Spanish.

It will take a couple of decades before the Spanish speaking Hispanics learn English well enough to call it their primary language.

History has shown that the children of immigrants learn the new language first in school and at play and pass it to their parents. Adults are reluctant to learn a new language sometimes. Some don't have the time or feel the need to learn a new way of communicating.

My father was very motivated to learn English. He spoke some English and quickly learned to communicate verbally. It took him several years to master reading and writing English. My mother could speak English on a very elementary level. She learned mostly from TV. She never learned to read or write English.

Obama is afraid that Americans going to Europe won't be able to speak French, German, Italian, Finnish, Spanish or Portuguese. He shouldn't worry. With his economic policies no one will be able to afford a European Vacation. (Even the Clark Griswold family will have stay at home.)

Obama has been drinking some of that stale, left over John Kerry Kool Aide. He's starting to copy Kerry's "One World" Socialism.

People who live in America, where the language is English, and dont really need to leave the country have the perfect right to only know English.

And, by the way, in Europe they all know eachother's languages because people move around from country to country so much while each country speaks something different. It is like if each state here spoke a different language, we would be forced to learn other languages to communicate with other Americans. Same idea.
Agreed. My son is fluent in both English and French. Personally, after being forced to press 2 for English, I have grown to hate the sound of spanish. So much so, if my life depended upon learning it, I'd rather be dead.

Aw, but no you wouldnt. You'd adapt.

You know, things change. Life is full of dislocation. How do you think smokers feel? How do you think racists feel? How do you think those honor-killing men feel? Buggy whip manufacturers went out of business and they complained all the way, too.

This isn't a defense of illegal immigration, just a reminder that Mongo is but pawn, in game of life.

uh, people should learn another language. I guess I cant understand how people can be so in favor of a globalized economy, yet so opposed to learning to speak another language. All it does is make yourself more marketable for a career.

Furthermore, for a country that seems to pride itself on "English only" it seems like the average dumba$$ barely understands how to use it.

Funny and true. I love seeing all these ignorant posts "Me and my family will only speak English!".

I think it is great... because my bilingual family will adapt and succeed more in life.

In today's global world if you are a one language person you are way behind.

even bilingual customer service jobs which are basically bottom of the barrel "you have a pulse, you're hired" type of jobs typically pay $18-$20 an hour around where I live. Thats not bad money at all if you live a pretty modest lifestyle.
