Huh??

Did you take history in school? What happened in WWII? How many countries did Russia add to its empire? How many are now free that didn't used to be? Do you remember Poland's struggle? Do you remember the Hungarian student demonstration where they were mowed down while the world watched? Do you think all these countries willingly became part of the Soviet bloc?

Who are the recently established, independent, "former" Russian republics??

Have you ever heard of the Baltic countries?

What was the wall in East Berlin all about?

Maybe you are too young to actually remember any of this, but it should have been in your history books, unless the books being used nowadays are liberal revisions of history.

No wonder people don't learn from history - and go on to repeat it - they don't KNOW their history.

Thankfully, at least McCain knows world history. He's got a perspective that Obama does not, and cannot acquire, and without the understanding he's in no position to lead in these difficult times. His so-called charm alone won't be enough.

I'm sorry this isn't 1960's and the conversation wasn't about the 50's either....if you wanted it to be that way, you should have specified then. Just b/c Russia invaded Georgia today doesn't mean i have to go back to WWII in order to try determining what their motives are.

I think one does have to look at current events in context of history, especially if we want to understand a country's motives. Nothing exists in a vacuum. If we understand the KGB, we'll understand Russian leaders and their intent and goals. They're threatening the Ukraine also - and for what?
Because the Ukraine wants to be a member of NATO? Georgia does too, and for good reason.

Only thing is, I doubt if NATO countries would be united in support any of these smaller nations, because it's much easier to 'sacrifice' them.

It is also easier to apply diplomacy and stay out of the daily skirmishes of unstable small Nations which could drag the Members into a full scale World War.

The Only Equal Nations are those of similar might, Economically and Militarily.

Forget about the whole KGB thing....put yourself in Putin's shoes. Would you just sit around while the West is out there encircling you with their NATO agenda? Would you let a neighboring country as unstable as Georgia, run by a US puppet, become a NATO member? Would you just sit there while the United States, a nuclear power a thousand miles away, installs missiles in your backyard neighbors? C'mon man?

they were just discussing on CNN how McCain has backed off from his initial comments and is now not wanting a conflict with Russia. The comment was that McCain and Obama were now in similar positions. That speaks volumes about McCain and his ADD impulsivity. How many times has he shot from the hip? Think of your own examples where he just read something and went with it. He is now a candidate shooting from the hip, what happens when he is President and shoots from the hip with our real military?

"His wife has defended his outbursts as signs of "passion". But even some of his friends and supporters worry that displays of irrational anger could prove disastrous if he became the most powerful man in the world, with a thermonuclear arsenal at his fingertips." - US Elections: Fears Over Senator John McCain's Outbursts Of Temper | World News | Sky News

By the way someone on some thread was looking for a picture of McCain from the POW days. There is one of him in a hospital bed at the above link, (I think pretty immediately) post-release.
