I don't think they've always been this way. I think they saw their opportunity to get votes from people who only vote on one or two issues (abortion for one) and now those are the identifying characteristics of a Republican.
I feel sorry for true, old fashioned Republicans. Jesus stole your party away from you.
The poll title is self-explanatory. Just curious how many Republicans on CD feel the party has been led widely astray due do to it's collusion with Christian Fundamentalists.
The Christianity Bush's administration has claimed to be promoting, in my mind is the "Church of Political Expediency" and in my eyes, is not Christianity at all.
Fundamentalist Christians are merely a cross-section of society, along with a whole lotta other "fringe" groups. Muslims, buddhists, Jehovah Witness, all allowed the vote. No fringe group is nuttier to me than most atheists I have met, clearly off the wall on many issues. But they too are allowed the vote here. It is STILL a right to have free speech and to worship freely here. And if some party member is unhappy with who comprises their party, they are free also to move on, find another party, make their own party, etc.
As an independent I feel the Christian Right's influence on the party has deprived me of reasonable hope of there being a Republican I can vote for, at least on the national level.
I left the Republican Party because I was tired of being ignored. My reason for being a Republican was because I believed in a humble foreign policy, smaller government, and fiscal responsibility. However, all I ever heard were candidates talking about these things and never actually delivering them. All I did hear was abortion issues and gays, and I sat back and watched them talk about these as well and then do little to progress those issues either, even though they held the Executive and the Congress as well as a fairly conservative Supreme Court. I have never identified with social conservatives or their issues but I figured people don't have to agree on everything to still remain an effective party. Too bad there aren't any actual conservatives in Republican politics anymore.
Yes, I have mentioned before there are fiscal conservatives as well as social ones, and the former seem to be drowned out by the latter. I personally wish they would support stem cell research, gay marriage, securing the borders once and for all, etc. I think less government, less spending, and less taxes are the best. They don't really represent my views with the right wing social views, but because of the tax stance neither do the democrats.
Under that premise, the whole forum doesn't work because it's anonymous.
