no but anyone who has is saying that he didn't participate in the meetings he should have. He didn't go to the meeting of Senate Republicans, he was reported to have been in his washington offices most of the day.

Have you forgotten the benefits of listening? The meeting turned into a shouting match. You expected him to participate in that? And if he had, would you be pouncing on him for that instead? I'd expect a good leader to listen and think and plan the strategy to pull opposites together in unity and agreement on a plan that would satisfy all sides AND benefit the citizens of this country. Why should he lay his cards on the table when he can see that there's no hope of arriving at consensus at that time?
Meanwhile McCain, who dramatically announced Wednesday that he was suspending his campaign to deal with the economic crisis, stayed silent for most of the session and spoke only briefly to voice general principles for a rescue plan.
He has done his work but just showing up, he stopped the dems from spending another blank check.

you've GOT to be delusional. I don't think there is a single person on capital hill that wanted the election dragged into this, and now it has been. all thanks to your candidate. Not only that, but thanks to him it seems we didn't meet an agreement, but only on the republican side of the house. The senate republicans were willing, but now McCain shows up and we've got a problem.
It's ridiculous all this "showmanship" on McCain's part, and he doesn't even participate. Obama participated more in that meeting.
And, what's it got to do with not going to a debate?!! He didn't hesitate to be interviewed by Katie Couric (instead of David Letterman), and then he attended some kind of event that night, when he said he must IMMEDIATELY get to Washington! He didn't go until the next day.
What an idiot, along with his idiot pick for VP, who really looked like a total fool in her interview with Couric. "Alaska is next to Russia and Canada, so I know international relations". Unbelievable that a person like that is even on a national ticket - what was fuddy-duddy McCain thinking??
Really, the only thing gramps can contribute at this stage is to add more politics, not policy to the negotiations. His butt needs to be at the debate.
I think this whole week has been a disaster for the McCain/Palin ticket and those that are trying to save face (smd1998, teatime, etc) are really only fooling themselves.

Sarah Palin of Alaska, his running mate, struggled through questions about her foreign policy credentials during an interview with CBS News. Mr. McCain was lampooned on television by David Letterman.
Still, by nightfall, the day provided the younger and less experienced Mr. Obama an opportunity to, in effect, shift roles with Mr. McCain. For a moment, at least, it was Mr. Obama presenting himself as the old hand at consensus building, and as the real face of bipartisan politics.
“What I’ve found, and I think it was confirmed today, is that when you inject presidential politics into delicate negotiations, it’s not necessarily as helpful as it needs to be,” Mr. Obama told reporters Thursday evening. “Just because there is a lot of glare of the spotlight, there’s the potential for posturing or suspicions.”
“When you’re not worrying about who’s getting credit, or who’s getting blamed, then things tend to move forward a little more constructively,” he said.
