It is a simple question, I don't understand why people "overreact" to it. Yes, he is black. As for the 1/2 Chinese and 1/2 Black, that would mean that person would be the first Chinese president as well as the first Black president. So to answer your question, yes, he would be the first black president and given the current polls... it is STILL a tight race, the average polls have Obama at 6.4% advantage... which is STILL a tight race... he could be the first black president or he might not be... don't really matter given the alternative... both bad candidates overall.. one is a socialist and the other is a warmonger... Americans can sure pick them can't they...

Maybe we could paint half of Obama white and the people who want a white president could look at that side. People who prefer the black Obama could look at the other side. Oh, but what about the color blind and blind? How will they know what color he is? Does anybody care if the right side is white and the left is black or should we reverse it? Maybe stripes? That would be OK with me but no polka-dots, I really don't like polka-dot people.

Who cares, all I need to hear is:

I Barack Hussein Obama do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

Yes, he will be the first African American president because he "looks" black. But he will not be a "Black" President. He probably won't have any black people in his cabinet. Only if they are really really qualified...maybe...Colin Powell?..maybe.

So "White" Presidents have appointed nothing but qualified people, and there really aren't that many qualified blacks out there?

Wrong on both counts.

Thankyou all for your very thoughtful responces...my best friends grandaughter is half black..I love this child so much. But her mom considers her biracial not black or white. So that is why I asked the question about Barack. Of course he is a human being...but this is considered an historic election because everyone is considering him the first black president...thats why I asked the question...will he truly be our first "Black" president? I am thinking the answer to this question is yes....I say this because I can see it in the eyes of all of the African americans that are lining up for hours to vote for him. I am almost jealous that I do not have a candidate that I feel that passionate about. I will not be voting for him, the reasons have nothing to do with his skin color.

The US has NEVER recognized the distinction, in law or custom, between a African American of pure African origin or one who is the product of interracial parentage. So why this question is give such notice now is curious to say the least.

Homer Plessy in 1896 sued the Supreme Court of Louisiana when that court denied his request for equal protection under the 13th and 14th Amendment when he was denied access to the "white coach" of a East Louisiana Railroad car. Supreme Court of the U.S. in its infamous 8-1 1896 decision found, that Plessy who was 1/8th African, and by all outward appearances European, was correctly denied access to the white's only coach, and in so doing cemented into law what was in effect the one drop rule that still dominates American racial classification when it comes to African Americans.

So to answer your question based upon the history and customs of the United States, yes Obama is very much an African American.
