What is the difference between these? McCain is ahead slightly in the Popular vote and Obama seems ahead by quite a bit in the Electoral. What does this mean??

Basically the electoral college vote based upon what they think their particular state want. Its actually an archaic system that was put into place when the majority of the population were uneducated and unable to vote

Seriously though when I first studied the electoral system in the 6th grade I thought it was odd. Why not just use the popular vote, especially in this day and age?

Exactly. This happened to Gore in 2000, he won the popular vote but based on population in certain states, he didn't win. I do believe the electoral vote started based on someones conception that the general public wasn't intelligent enough to actually vote for a president. At least I think that's how it went.Oh wait, I just noticed you said almost the exact same thing, duh!

Because it gives a chance for the smaller states to have a major say in the election process.
