Though the article goes on to state the Obamas do plan to attend church in future, it's nice to see, for a change, a president who doesn't attend services just for show. In fact, I think the ideal situation would be to have an atheist in the oval office.
Quote:
President-elect Barack Obama has yet to attend church services since winning the White House earlier this month, a departure from the example of his two immediate predecessors.
On the three Sundays since his election, Obama has instead used his free time to get in workouts at a Chicago gym.
I'd skip church to if it meant listening to Wright.
An atheist in the oval office...Oh gosh, that will happen one of these days, but I'm hope I'm living in my Heavenly Home when it does. Yikes!! Who will bless American then?
As the article stated, the Obamas don't want to draw attention to themselves. for the same reason Saint Ronnie never attended church. Is he an atheist too? Oregon is the most unchurched state in the union, yet we have one of the highest rates of volunteerism in the country. We have fewer hypocrites in our state. Action speaks louder than words.
Clip:
Your predecessors dealt with church attendance in various ways. Jimmy Carter taught Sunday school at a Baptist church in Virginia while he was President. Ronald Reagan didn't go to church at all, citing the hassle of making a church set up security screening for parishioners. The Clintons drove down the street every Sunday to Foundry United Methodist, where Chelsea sang in the youth choir. George W. Bush never became a regular member of any local church, preferring to worship most often at the chapel at Camp David. What Church Will President Obama Attend? - TIME
There is a separation of church and state in this country. Whether a person is religious and attends a church (or synagogue or temple or whatever) is a personal decision. It has NOTHING to do with one's ability to successfully head a democracy.

Exactly! Which is why it wouldn't matter if the president was an atheist....and some may have been....no, they may not have said so because they knew really stupid people wouldn't vote for them...but that doesn't mean there weren't any.
