I'll tell ya what, I had a hell of a lot more fun as a teen...no matter what I had to spend then or now. Simply because I was more free, unencumbered by responsibility.
Of course adults sacrifice, it is in the adult (parental) job description. I have not forgotten how to have FUN, but I put some types of fun on the back burner while I raised my kids. Now that they are grown, I can feel free to feel less encumbered, again.
I find it curious that the graph says teens spend more on books than adults. What teen reads if they aren't forced?
Had an interesting experience with books and clothes yesterday.....I was at the laundromat, doing my laundry. As churned and then spun, I was doing one of those old fashion things, actually reading a book (the same one currently under the key board, "The Great Train Robbery". I would look up every so often to watch my laundry in the dryer.
Nothing too fancy, just lots of cottons, occasional nylon running shorts, a spinning. I don't need to be fancy day to day because not only does cotton work for me, but it's rather fun, too!
A similar thing with the book. These days when I see people wait, they have their smartphone in hand while I have book or a magazine. So to say that teens spend more on books doesn't seem quite right since probably the only people who still read books are dinosaurs like me.
Of course, they could mean kindles, but I still find it hard to believe that teens today are actually reading that much. I'm guessing that the only teens who are reading significantly are freshmen and sophomores who have to spend money on books but if so.....then aren't they more like the adult and less like the teen?

I think that more people are reading free online, or maybe even making use of the library. I used to do that, when we lived near a good library, but since the one here is ....um.....awful, I do not go (note to future lottery winners: Donate to your local library.)
I do buy books on Amazon, but only when it is something I really want.
as for the Furniture, IF one buys quality, then that can be a one time expense. Or, do like we did when we moved, shop at Ikea. Now I have to spend this weekend shopping for a new dresser for my teenager because I cannot repair the one we got at Ikea anymore. And I have repaired it already more times than I can count.
I will probably talk him into an antique, something old like I have that is very ell made. That means he may never have to buy another one.
As for the entertainment, well, if that includes travel, then my entertainment expense is a close second to the car and the mortgage.
I do like to be entertained, and since I make the $$ and I pay for it, then I can do it
