Possibly Moving from Newport News, VA to Eugene Oregon in July (Portland: apartment complexes, rentals)

Hello,

I'm trying to get some information on Eugene, OR.. I have gotten a job offer at the EUG airport. I didn't really care for the area around the airport just because of the factories and industrial feel. I visited Eugene in April for 3 days to check out the area and I thought it seemed pretty nice overall.

I have been in Newport News, VA and its really not a bad place to live.. I'm just tired of the heat, very high cost of living, military and lack of activities to do around here.

How do you like Eugene? How long have you lived in Eugene?

I'm looking for any advice positive or negative that anyone is willing to share.

I'm not too familiar with the area so any recommendations on the best areas to live would be appreciated!

I would look at the previouse posts. All your questions have already been answered. You are on the right track. Look at the area for more than a day, have a job, then move.

Hey thanks very much for you post..

I did look at previous posts but most of it is out dated. I know the economy was really bad for a while but is now getting better.. I guess I was looking for more info for 2012 and beyond.

The info would be optimistic at best. Many areas are still on a downhill slide.

Working in the Electrical field, things have gradually started to pick up for us. There seems to be construction going on slowly again. There are numerous new apartment complexes going up. The University of Oregon has quite a but of new construction taking place. The residential market is still way down as far as new home construction but commercial development seems to be on the upswing.

I have lived in Eugene/Springfield all my life and I find it to be a great area.

As far as living, im not sure what your looking for, whether it be a house, apartment etc nor your budget but I would start my search in the following areas.

In Eugene I would start in the Coburg Road area. You could also look in the River Road and Bethel/Danebo vicinity. Another option you may want to consider is the Thurston area in Springfield. It is a nice area and housing can run you a little less out there.

There is a lot to like in the Eugene/Springfield area and your close to many other things. Lakes, Rivers,the Ocean, the Mountains. If you want to get away to a bigger city your two hours south of Portland and a little over 4 Hours south of Seattle.

Thanks for your post.. I really appreciate it!

As far as places to rent.. I'm pretty flexible and I can afford up to 1300month. I was trying to find out the better areas to rent at first and I think you pointed out some good places to start.

I thought that north & south Eugene looked decent from the rentals I'm finding online. I will be working at the Eugene airport so I would like to be close to work but I'm willing to commute too. I didn't really care for the area around the airport it seems kind of industrial.

I saw some nice homes in Santa Clara when I visited.. is that a decent area?

I'm really into the outdoors so I think I will like Eugene alot.. My Girlfriend is an artist so she is really excited to be in an area that is more artsy.. Virginia doesn't really have much to offer for either of us! I'm ready for a cooler climate too!

Having lived in Virginia, the Valley is almost a twin for your part of the country. You are not going to see much change in weather or terrain. Just more rain and just as much summer heat.
