I hear Amsterdam is ending or has ended the coffee shops for tourists. You got to present ID or something. Damn shame, they were a fun place when I went many years ago. I'm not a big weed guy but I enjoyed the atmosphere and meeting new people there.
That being said Amsterdam is kinda cool to see but to live there? Well, it'd be damn hard Especially if you got to walk through the red light district on a regular basis. If you're a man it's a constant case of blue balls seeing all those beautiful girls scantily dressed gesturing for you even though you know it's all bull**** and for money, and if you're a man's woman, you gotta be wondering if he'd give in at any point. I dunno how couples work there....
But Venice is unlike anything in Amsterdam. Truly romantic, don't go alone. Bring your SO and you'll enjoy that city. Just because they have canals doesn't mean they're the same
Paris would be my favorite city to move to in Europe. Then Barcelona. Then Rome.
Berlin is anything but boring. It's a cosmopolitan and diverse city, but with a fairly large amount of grit. It's also incredibly vibrant and has a great mass transit system for getting around.
It seems like you're making generalizations about things you know little about just based on the way the media picture it. Maybe I'm wrong. Just saying.
Any American tourist that visits those cities (I'm not including cities near the pole or in former communist countries) will find more tourists like himself, inflated prices, bad service and their dollars will go as far as monopoly money.
So I will recommend three cities, Zamora, Orense and Coimbra. Last time I was in Coimbra was a long time ago, so I don't know if the city is a tourist trap now.
