I'v been to London and Paris and wasn't really disappointed but if I went again I'd want to go to Edinburgh, Bergen, Oslo, Stockholm, Zagreb, Munich, Interlaken, Florence, and San Sebastian. Maybe throw in some others I'm not thinking about at the moment.
Ok, I'm going to hijack this thread a bit . I didn't want to start a new one though. Our family is going to take a trip to Europe and we need a little help deciding where to go. Should we start in Brussles or Berlin? Both should have architecture, museums, ample history... Then would you prefer to visit Strasbourg or Stuttgart for the middle portion? To end it, would you rather go to Zurich/Swiss alps or Munich/German alps?
My fear of Switzerland is that it would be very similar to Colorado resort towns and areas like Crested Butte, Vail, Aspen, Ouray, Steamboat Springs, Pagosa Springs... in both culture and scenery. Is it? I know they call some of these areas like Ouray little Switzerland for Colorado. Given we've seen all these places multiple times, would Switzerland seem rather similar to our homestates vacation?
Finally, a lot of our ancestors were from the Rhineland-Palatinate area near Luxembourg. Is the rural area around there and the villages in that area somewhat neat?
We are planning for about 10-12 days in early October.

Thanks in advance for any responses.
Personally I'd fly into Brussels and then drive down through the Ardennes into the Alsace Lorraine region (Strasbourg is beautiful) as well as through Luxembourg. Then I'd cut across Germany and hit Heidelberg on the way to the German/Austrian Alps - headed through Berchtesgaden and into Salzburg.
I personally prefer the German Alps to the Swiss Alps. Not that it will seem like Colorado, but because frankly Switzerland seems more sterile and less lively than Germany. I will probably catch flak for saying that but it's just my personal opinion based on numerous vacations and trips to those areas.

Go early in October - October can be rainy.
You're going to have a blast!
Thanks for the advice! I had heard Heidelberg recommended from a few other people.

Zurich and Munich are both pretty nice cities. In the end it all boils down to personal preferences, though.
All I can say is that Zurich certainly doesn't feel like a ski resort, simply because it isn't one. Totally different experience IMO.
