I can't say that I've traveled a whole lot, but Gran Via in Madrid is one of my favorite places in the world. Pic that I took...
Maybe it's because I like big cities but have never lived in one. I stayed in a hostel on Gran Via for 2 weeks and it felt like I was living in the Spanish version of New York. When I went to Barcelona, I felt like just another one of the thousands of tourists.
I'll still take Sevilla over both cities. I thoroughly enjoyed it much more!
So many people love Sevilla. I don't know why. I know that it's historical and has some neat buildings, but I've only spent a day there and felt it was enough. For me, it was just a stopover to get to the Algarve in Portugal.

On top of that, Sagrada Familia is one of the biggest wastes of time. It is incomplete. Your admission ticket helps pay for its completion. The autonomous region of Catalonia should pay a bigger share. Good luck trying to take a picture of it without having a crane or construction equipment in the way.
The buildings in Madrid are more interesting, overall. One of the few interesting buildings in Barcelona is Richard Meier's Museum of Contemporary Art, partly because you are walking through an old neighborhood, and it's like an apparition.
I have the impression that Barcelona has a lot more interesting modernist architecture, which I'm interested in, than staid Madrid, am I correct?

For modernist, I would say so. But it won't be all in one place. It will be here and there. When I was in Madrid changing planes in 2007, I saw a cluster of 4 tall skyscrapers under construction from the airport. I didn't have a map of Madrid handy, so I have no clue what they are called and where in greater Madrid they are located. Obviously, Madrid will have some, too, but it is known for its older core which doesn't seem to have many, if any, newer buildings.

I'm interested in quirky, conceptual artwork from the 20th century. E.g. things that look like a 1950s idea of a futuristic space home. It seems Spain and Italy were both very prominent on that front.
I would compare the architecture of Madrid with Paris... the style is quite similar specially the palaces and elegant buildings in the centre, probably due to the royalty.
Really? I don't think so... Barcelona is more "modern" Gaudi style, alternative, etc... Madrid is more from the 18th Century, stone buildings, it reminds me more to Paris.
I've never been to Paris, but when I was in Barcelona, it reminded me of what I imagined Paris would be like. Very nice city, I just prefer Madrid.
