Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, is a Mediterranean and cosmopolitan city with Roman remains, medieval quarters and the most beautiful examples of 20th century Modernism and avant-garde. It is no surprise that emblematic constructions by the Catalan architects Antoni Gaudí and Lluís Doménech i Montaner have been declared World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO.

Madrid and Barcelona come WAY after Rome. No comparison whatsoever. This is laughable. A neighborhood in Rome has more to offer than Barcelona and Madrid put together.

rome is indeed amazing for its ancient history. but what i find laughable is that some compare the streetlife and nightlife to madrid or barcelona. even infratructure? madrid and barcelona are eay ahead in those respects. and rspecially concerning nightlife madrid is on a different planet to any other city. have been to new york, berlin, amsterdam, prague, london, bankok to name a few and are all quite boring compared to madrid when it comes to nightlife.

I'm curious as to what makes nightlife in Spanish cities so much better than the rest?

i live in australia and can tell u that its not the same thing walking at 1 am in melbourne with few or no people on the streets compared to going out in madrid where the city looks like a festival in so many zones of the city . i.e puerta del sol , calle preciados , calle arenal , calle del carmen, plaza mayor , la latina, huertas , plaza santa ana, lavapies, malasania , etc i could go on. i know the city quite well now as i have now visited 6 times. the first time i saw this amazing niht time activity i nearly had tears in my eyes as u have to see it to believe it. besides u didnt know that spaniards are famous for nightlife?

But you are not describing nightlife, but the way Spanish live...so going "de chiquitos" or "tapeo" or posing in cafeterias is just part of the Spanish way of life...

As such, the term "nightlife" is kind of new in Spain...since it was not compartimentalized before. Say, going to bars, etc, are just an extension if daily lives that extends to discos...

I guess that what you understand as nightlife is going to discos or cocktails bars packed with kids, somewhere in some industrial park or in a packed disco like Amnesia, or going to afters.

thats what youve said not me. i couldnt care less about massive nightclubs. personally im not much into them. its one of the reasons why im not much into places like ibiza. i love madrids nightlife because of the different variety and age groups you find in different zones of the city. the fact that so many eating establishments are open so late besides many shops. i especially love its lateness. the fact that the streets are buzzing till 8 in the morning seven nights a week. all of italy is incredibly boring in comparison. in fact its one the the things that disdapointed me the most. being an ignorant australian i imagined italy would be the same as spain converning nigjtlife. absolutely nothing like it. i also love the fact that u can sit in a typical spanish plaza be it 10 in the morning or 4 in the morning and chat with friends and being surrounded and animated with people from all walks ofife. cheers

Do you ever get out and about in Melbourne at 1am on a Friday or Saturday night? Quite a lot of people, especially on Flinders, Swanston, Elizabeth, Bourke, Russell and other areas like Carlton, Fitzroy, St Kilda, South Yarra. Obviously, the west end of Collins ain't gonna be pumping but even then you have quite a few coming from southern cross. Every year it seems to get more and more active at night, what you say is misleading.
