I have the same kind of question Maxim - what THIS style of music would be called.

The name of this band popped up while I was watching recent "The Russians" documentary, ( apparently their music was used there as well, ) so here it is.

I don't even know what to think of it.

"Scary"

If it's a metal band, then you can check out the Metal Archives.

You are sending me in a wrong direction, MWR.

Whatever it is, it doesn't sound anything "metal" to me.

The one Maksim shared definitely has metal elements in it. I was assuming you were referring to that one.

Probably.
But I have tendency to skip anything that has word "folk" in it.

So this is HIS band.

( Nothing in "metal archives" on it though.)

But no, I was wondering about ppl. and their style of music that I've posted after Maxim.

Oh, I remember this band, I was posted "Scary" a couple of years ago. They call their music avant pop.

Enter the covert hiding place where music of Russian band Shortparis dwells, waiting to be discovered. Young men born in Siberia, now reside in most European city of Russia delivering their own unique brand of music. The music of Shortparis: where neurotic attrition gives birth to a beautiful still born child dancing on the streets of Saint Petersburg away to a new kind of moon. This irrational, spastic dance groove borderlines somewhere between dark electro, post-punk, experimental noise and acoustic chanson. All of it routed deeply in decadent movement esthetics strangely passed though often confusing labyrinths of Russian soul, a perception that yet to be understood. In short, this is gothic music without being even closely Goth.

Exalted, excessively agitated vocal in French at times recalls an alien mating call from some wonderfully strange sci-fi movie you never seen. It flies over cold, yet vigorous drum beats delivered by two drummers simultaneously: acoustic and electronic. Bass lines move through musical canvas sounding like some cold fidgety snakes escaping a clammy pit full of early Robert Smith revelations, circa 1981. And then the acoustic guitar chimes, the listener may lose it completely, as traditional French chanson slowly migrates into some sort of a sorrowful Russian ballad (still in French) recalling a wailful cry of Russian barge haulers. All of these elements fuse into a twisted, choreic measure for people who neither dance nor smile, perhaps only on an inside.

Live Shortparis is a completely different kind of animal. On stage studio discipline gives way to absolutely theatrical performance full of frantic and inexhaustible delivery. A bizarre place in their own universe where ancient Greek drama collides with early post-punk visuals of great early 80’s protagonists, such as Peter Murphy, Siouxsie Sioux, Ian Curtis and Nick Cave. Comparing or associating Shortparis with well-known names would be untasteful. However, at times their music may recall Derniere Volonte, Einstürzende Neubauten, Fad Gadget, Cranes and even Sergei Prokofiev.

In a country where adult men kiss and hug each other times more often than their tolerant western colleagues, highly homoerotic live performances of Shorparis may seem paradoxical and completely uncalled for, but in fact it all makes perfect sense. As a matter of fact, unexpectedly, it seems quite logical that a band like Shortparis would come out such country as Russia. Think about it, Russia is always been all about contradictions, really. It’s alive and doesn’t compute to westerners. So don’t expect dull, boring or mundane things to emerge from there. At the age when being weird already became a synonym of bad taste, four young Russian men from Shortparis give listeners a hope for a true rebirth of unusual in art, all without trendy clichés, beautifully.

+ I don't think it makes much sense to talk about genres at present. Postmodernism grinds genres like a water mill. Top bands and performers usually have several genres or several projects in their arsenal (for example, Feofan and Pnevmoslon are projects of one person in different genres). And that's the beauty. You can take two genres (for example, street hip-hop about a bad guys and black metal) and get an ingenious song that destroys both of these genres.

https://youtu.be/vr3HwydF6p0

I try to translate a fragment of the song:

...суровое хмурое гетто/it's harsh gloomy ghetto
...земля отмороженных бесов из подвальных качалок/it's land of frostbitten imps from underground gym
...в этом королевстве холод/it's cold in this Kingdom

The ghetto is buried in icy sarcophagus of brutal winter
Black winds howl between houses, like wandering dog demons
Children residential districts like Sons of Eternal Northern Darkness crawl out
Вечной северной тьмы выползают сыны - дети спальных районов/crawl out of doors of apartment buildings into the frozen world like worms from grave holes

Wolves are young, hungry, angry, merciless with their enemies
What have you forgotten here? Run, happy feet, moron! Take care of your snout!
Cops won't come, pleading won't save! F**k you, a**hole!

Fire and knife are waiting for strangers here
Robbery, broken face, mockery and grave
Vasya, where are you from? Let us make your phone to call! (Don't move!)
We want to raise a toast to Odin, buy us a beer!(Come here!)
All villains hang out at a burning tanks
This is an angry satanic mob of sadists and maniacs
B**ches are baking in a containers for the glory of Darkness
Thugs look into the ritual fire and scream heart-rendingly

Onyx/Here the evil power of medieval darkness is black like Onyx
Rolex!/I swear! Light guides us - Rolex was taken from a sucker!

...в арктическом гетто/...in the arctic ghetto
...орда рвёт своё/...the horde takes its toll
...здесь никогда не утихнет жестокая буря!/...a fierce storm will never subside here!

This is very cool and very funny.
