I've never seen US plates in Austria before. Neither the regular ones, nor the NATO ones since American military vehicles usually aren't allowed to cross Austria when driving to Italy. I've seen some American officers as visitors on our military bases, though. They usually get there with a regular Austrian car or some sort of Austrian military vehicle.

My parents told me that when they moved back from the US to Austria, they shipped their car to Austria and used their American plates for the first couple of weeks. So, technically, I've probably seen a US plate in Austria, but I can't remember

You probably just haven't noticed, these are not military viehicles but private autos belonging to US personal and they do tend to drive all over Europe when they have time off.

Ah, I thought those were the new designs for the military license plates. Why don't they just use the regular German ones?

Edit: Just read on wikipedia that those license plates were only in use from 2000 to 2005. Now they obviously use the regular German ones due to security concerns.

Very rarely here now.
I bet it was much more common until the 90s when Bremerhaven had its large US Base.

I see them quite often here too- especially the bulgarian ones.

Saw once, many years ago. If I am not mistaken it there was a Jeep Grand Cherokee, very popular in 90'. Now the American cars are made out only on local license plates, and in general it is not enough of them.
