From Semafor...

Quote:
Orthodox Christians in Ukraine marked their first Gregorian Christmas, underlining their country’s cultural and religious split from Russia. Kyiv had traditionally marked Christmas on the Julian calendar, also used by Russia, but its Orthodox Church broke from Moscow’s following the 2014 annexation of Crimea and this year began marking Christmas on Dec. 25, with much of the Western world. The celebrations came as The New York Times reported Russian President Vladimir Putin had signaled through intermediaries he was open to a ceasefire with Ukraine that froze the conflict along its current battlelines. Analysts were skeptical of his intentions, though: “The timing … is more consistent with Russia’s ongoing efforts to delay and discourage further Western military assistance,” the Institute for the Study of War wrote.

The future of Ukraine is dependent on USA, if the MAGA idiot gets a second chance all aid to Ukraine is stopped. The American right wing loves Putin and Russia.

The American extreme Right would sell its country down the river to KGB Pootie et al. Reagan has been rolling in his grave since 2016, if not earlier. Even that witless wonder, "W" Bush, was enamored with the gremlin in the Kremlin. Be careful with your vote this year. And be vigilant regarding vote suppression tactics. If you use voting machines vs. mail-in ballots, make sure the machines register your vote correctly. Check your voter registration prior to AND at the start of the voting period, to make sure you're still registered, and your name hasn't been dropped from the rolls. Don't assume it couldn't happen in Oakland.

There are many people who are non right leaning and do not support additional aid to Ukraine. This war is about geopolitics period. After Iraq and Afghanistan you would have thought people would understand how our government works, but sadly no.

I voted for Biden because I wanted a return to a level of stability. In fact I've never voted for a Republican at the national level. This year, I'll likely sustain or vote for RFK Jr (still evaluating him as a candidate). Biden is just the same as Trump, it's just Trump is more upfront with his antics and desires. Biden tries to do everything in the dark. Biden foreign' s policy has been for lack of a better word "Trash." In his short time we have increased tensions or conflicts with China, North Korea, Iran, Ukraine, and the Middle East. Interesting how Trump was labeled a war monger when he was in office, and how people shouted "he is going to get us into WWIII. Biden comes in and literally has us on the brink of WWIII, and those same people are now shouting "we have to support Ukraine with whatever it takes."

Regarding Ukraine's future, well that is in their hand. Very unlikely they can drive out the Russians and they run a good chance of losing additional territory. We can supply them money and weapons but we can't provide men. This matter could have been handled in a different matter before any hostilities started. Our billions of dollars have done nothing but enflamed the conflict. Continuing is just delaying the inevitable. Unless we are willing to commit troops, nothing is going to change the tide.

At the current rate Ukraine is following in the footsteps of Paraguay in the Paraguayan War (1864-1870) where they fought on until the last man, lost the war anyway and gave up territory to both Brazil and Argentina and then had to essentially import men from around the world to recover their demographic losses, as some estimate they lost 90% of military age men. Of course Paraguay didn’t have the US on their side but unless the west is willing to escalate the war and send their own troops to assist, not sure if Ukraine will be able to pull off a win? And with all the men lost will it even be worth it? Personally I value human lives over land, and Ukraine was already experiencing a demographic crisis before the war started, but ultimately this is for Ukrainians to decide if they are willing to fight on until the last man standing. Plus all the infrastructure that already needs to be repaired, well it’s only going to get worse the longer this war gets dragged on. One way or another Ukraine has a long road to recovery and many debts to pay off. But I do wish Ukraine all the best and that their gamble ends well. But I suppose it would still be a gamble to make a peace treaty with Russia as they haven’t proven themselves to be exactly trustworthy and will only reinvigorate them. So Ukraine is stuck between a rock and a hard place with few options and an uncertain future.

Thanks for the advice at the ballot box but I will not vote for anybody this year. Anyway I hope the Ukrainian will get some peace.
