I lived in Bochum, Germany for about a year. Worked nearby in Dortmund. I would not describe it as touristy. Just go to Germany and have a great time! Try and learn the language and get involved with local activities. Good luck.

St. Pauli is only a quarter in Hamburg. But a very famous one.

wiki is helpfull St. Pauli - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It is one of the centers of the *alternativ* scene - you should be a very, very, very left minded man to like it there. There are some riots over the year.

It is an amazing place - but absolutely not what you would think about *real germany*

Stayed in a hotel right across the street of Jolly Roger and the Millerntor Stadion when St. Pauli played against the Cuban national team. Well, that was a bit crazy. But the city grew on me during that stay

Any suggestings?
I am not so sure you would like the most German places in Germany.
But Germany has various cultures, like the US, there is not one German culture.
I would say the center is typical German, i.e. northern Hesse, Thuringia, southern Lower Saxony. Göttingen is a rather good place to live...
