Yes more or less my impression too...

Dirty, old, cracked streets, mean people, riots, tiny streets, disgusting water, overcrowded, aging, no infrastructure. I'd rather live in some South American country than Venice.

One of the most overrated cities in the world. I enjoyed my two visits, but a third one would be a waste of time.

I can understand that the casual tourist gets turned off by the smells and the crowds, but, in my view, Venice has a unique place in especially Eastern Mediterranean history and one needs to understand it from that perspective in order to fully appreciate it.

Priceless!
This sums up my feeling. Though if I could afford to live in Venice, I could probably afford to live in a little chalet up in the Alps during the worst of the summer heat and tourists.

Winter is the season of floods, and in February there are a lot of tourists too because of the Carnival, so it is another season in which it is not easy to fully enjoy to live in the historical part of Venice.
I would suggest you to point directly toward the Alps and forget Venice, up to 1000 m of altitude many towns are livable all year round

When I retire, one of our plans is to VRBO an apartment on a quiet campo/square in Venice (yes, there are quiet areas in Venice) and live like locals for a couple of months. I would never buy there, lord no - but sitting in the sun with a cold beer and a bowl of chips after shopping at a small farmer market - before heading back to the apartment sounds like fun to us. We've been there twice before and loved it. We hope to VRBO our way around the earth!!
