I hear that Italian is the closest to Latin of all of the Romance languages. Do any of the Romance and/or Italian speakers that also know Latin think so?

Almost the closest: the true closest is Sardinian
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sardin...guage#Overview

Latin Pone mihi tres panes in bertula
Sardinian Ponemi tres panes in bertula
Italian Mettimi tre pani nella bisaccia
English Put three loaves of bread in the bag for me

There's no real way to say for sure.

All of the Latin languages evolved out of Vulgar Latin, or the Latin of the commoners. They're all different from Classical Latin.

I have heard that some Spanish dialects are more conservative than modern Italian, at least in certain forms if not vocabulary.

Anyone confirm?

I have the impression that either it is a homework or term paper assignment, or he's trying to decide which language to take in college that is the most convenient.

Have you studied Romanian? It has retained some of the archaic features of Latin, that the western Romance languages lost long ago. You might find it fascinating.

I think each one has retained some archaic features of Latin, for example Portuguese has a future infinitive that comes right from the Latin, also used in some Spanish-speaking countries, I believe, in technical legal language, or certain sentence structures in Italian as if one were reading Sallust.
