Headin2CHI, you could always take your Juris Doctorate, learn something about the German legal system and join the rest of the "expats" that hang around outside U.S. military installations in Germany. Just a thought...
Germany. Goodness I miss that wonderful country. I lived there for three years and fell in love with her. Beautiful, absolutely beautiful. I lived near Heidelberg and was never happier in my life. I am a US citizen, btw.
I lived in Germany 18 years (no US military connection).
Heathlcare: very good! For a severe back ailment I spent 3 weeks in a hospital. Didn't cost me anything. I lost my job 5 days before the pain hit me.
I am still wearing the prescription glasses received in Germany. Eye exam, frames, and lenses cost me about the equivalent of $25.
Like some posters already mentioned the Arbeitsamt is not all that great. From my experience they have listings of mostly manual labor jobs.
Having a law degree may be very important for many German businesses. Try some of the German banks: Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank, Dresdner Bank. Very many German firms place as a requirement for employment fluency (written and spoken) in English.
In Germany many cities have a Volkshochschule, where German of various levels is taught for a nominal fee. You could enroll in an advanced course. Some US cities have a Goethe Institute where people can learn German.
health care has changed considerably, you seem to be a bit out of touch:
eyes, ears and teeth are no longer "all-inclusive", but can cost you a small fortune, especially when on "welfare" (called "hartz 4").
as to the banks, some of them keep disappearing very fast these days.
the op, however, may find instant employment (perks galore) with transnational
financial consultants...

Just sad, in a way ...
We lived there 1981-1989, then came back in 1993.
We were shocked how different almost everything was.
I can't imagine how much it is different now.
I have the feeling that *total* health care costs, might still be lower in Germany compared to the average cost in the USA.
^getting a bit more of the overall picture, all i can say is, here we are coming, and fast!
it would be too much to explain in detail the financial transactions triggering this mess. suffice it to say, most communities are "pleite", politicians counselled and adviced by global players and people in their frustration hanging on to propaganda, as if we never had this before..
we had managed to become a friendly and hospitable people; the mentality swing is what can truly be shocking.
