Thank you for these suggestions. A Coruña and Santiago de Compostela seem quite nice. Are there good jobs there, preferably clean-tech/high tech? We love cafes and museums, but aren't really "party all night" types. How are overall taxes in Spain and Galicia, in particular (income, sales, property, other), compared to the U.S., France and other European countries?
I have been researching Luxembourg over the last year, even took a trip out there this spring to explore and to talk to people at the school open houses. In my situation (five kids, wife is international tax accountant) it could work out well, but there can be lots of complications with work. It can be very difficult to get permanent employment, and if you don't get a yearly contract renewed, you may need to move out. Let me know if you want more details.
Spain has probably the best food, some of the most beautiful landscapes (mountains, forests, beaches) and laid-back life. However the economy is sinking, although English teachers are always sought.

I forgot to thank you for the Galicia Guide link--great site! I would definitely like to see Spain. I suppose a city with good business activity, historic preservation, a university and reasonable cost of living (relative to income) would be my ideal. Madrid is too expensive. Galicia seems nice, but is it a bit too quiet? We're young-ish (mid-30s). Any cities in Spain that might be good to consider?

Galicia is a beautiful area, but you must you love rain. A very cheap place compared to Madrid and Barcelona.
The job market is awful and pay is lower than in the rest of Spain. They have a good University-City, Santiago. Galicia is not a quiet place, people go out a lot in places such as Santiago or Coruña.
The countryside is beautiful. Galicia is a nice place for kids, but I guess that you'll need income from abroad or set up a Internet business, etc. There's a growing business of Rural Houses.
France has the best family services in Europe, which is why it has the highest birthrate.
no, this is cause france has a huge muslim population.
the fertility rate among french families is 1,6 while among muslim families in france its 9,1 and the most common name among parisian children is mohammed.
Don't go there, especially if you're a bit on the Conservative side :Toulouse is a dump , believe me, I know the Pink City - Ville Rose-very well, a lot of agressive, drunk bums with German shepherds in the streets, dog crap everywhere ,a huge Arabic population, dangerous suburbs (Labeige, Empalot...), the center as crowded as Paris,a huge chemical factory -AZF- exploded in 9/2001-10 days after 9/11, killing 30 people and shattering glass in the whole city, and now the new Mayor is a Left-winger (a Socialist), it's the only place I've seen with youngsters wearing Satanic t-shirts with a reversed cross with the motto "Bad religion"..
Wow, racist much? Nothing wrong with a large Arabic population -- they're some of the funnest, most loving people I've ever known.
