I decided to say **** the gimmicks and just went for the basics - jump roping

Well I tried to and I managed two inconsistent jumps. Little girls make it look so easy but when I try and do it, I fail and sometimes i land too hard on my legs.

How do I jump rope properly so i can get a good cardio workout?

Practice. Dont think of it as "jumping" rope, its actually "skipping" rope.

You only jump high enough off the ground so that the rope clears your feet. Any higher than that and youre jumping too high.

I do the rope if its too cold or if I have some nagging injury (ankle, knee, etc.) that prevents me from running.

Yep, practice makes perfect!

When I started boxing, we did 10 minutes as a warm-up. My first month, I would do a few skips and then fail. Then start again, and repeat.

After about a month, I could do the crosses and a double skip, etc.

So, keep at it, and you will get it!

1. Jump only slightly higher than the rope.
2. ALWAYS stay on the balls of your feet.
3. Spin the rope with your wrists and not your arms.
4. Take a look at this vid to learn the mechanics of proper jumping:

For me, jumping rope is the second best form of cardio training next to running. Another good thing about it as I mentioned before, is that I can do it if/when I have a nagging injury that prevents me from running.

Cool beans, thanks. I'm going to keep practicing until I get it down backed. so light jumps, spin with my wrists and not arms, didn't know about this part.

I'll keep doing it until i get it downpacked.

It definitely helps with building endurance.
Don't be discouraged if you can only get a few jumps in, as you start out. Before you know it, you'll be doing 100 to 200 and more skips.

Thanks, I won't. I could never do a pushup, but I practiced everynight until I was able to do 10 on my own. It's not a big number but it showed that as long as I keep at it, I'll succeed.

And yeah, it is a good fat burning workout. I managed a few jumps today and i can see how it'll be pretty effective.
