I've done so much martial arts, I probably wouldn't think anything except, "Huh, that seems dangerous" as they walked across the weightlifting part of the gym. Never mind dropping a weight on your foot...just the toe stubbing potential is very high (and your shoes actually do protect you that way).
Again with the dropping weights... unless you're wearing boots, your shoes will not protect you from that kind of impact.
I go to two gyms, a place for my regular cardio and weight training workouts, and a fighting gym. I box, so I wear boxing shoes when I train at the latter, but there are a couple areas with mats for grappling and muay thai training. I have done some Muay Thai, and as in Muay Thai you train barefoot, the matted areas are ONLY for bare feet, and they make sure the mats are properly cleaned, so it doesn't bother me. However, training barefoot in an area that is mostly transversed with people wearing shoes would disgust the living hell out of me.
And when I do squats and deadlifts, I just wear Chucks. The soles are flat enough that is almost feels exactly like I am barefoot, so it doesn't bother me.
Taking off shoes in the home is common in most Asian, African and Middle Eastern countries (but in Japan they offer you slippers) and also in Canada. Also fairly common in Eastern Europe (Poland and east). Much less common in France, U.K, Spain and the U.S.
Don't know about South America or Australia - anyone know?

Again with the illiterate posters.
What is illiterate about that post? I see a lot of illiteracy on these boards and it's annoying to me but that post is grammatically correct unless you enjoy adding random apostrophes to form plurals. Am I missing something?

Gyms are well-known for the germs that harbor there, so going bare-foot is really going to cause issues for someone eventually~! Plus, if a weight falls or someone drops one by accident, there ya go an injury for sure. Feet need to be protected just like people who ride bicycles to motorcycles~!
