I just signed up at LA Fitness. They have a pool which is the reason I signed up. I am a pretty good swimmer as I used to be a part of a swim club when I was a teenager. However, I haven't swum competitive in many many years now. I just had a baby and want to lose 35 pounds. How long do you guys swim for and do you think swimming is a good form of excersise for losing weight?

I love swimming. I need to do it more than i do. My suggestion is see if they have a Masters Swim class. They are usually early morning. It is a great class for all levels of swimmers that will improve your form and endurance.
I think swimming is just about the best exercise one can do. It works all areas of the body and is great cardio.

50 minutes, and Yes. (I don't get to go nearly as often as I'd like though, given where I live now & that I don't do the Y)

I lost the most weight while swimming... it melts off body fat if done correctly. I love it. I usually swim laps for about 45 minutes to an hour about 5-6 times a week (in the summer... my pool is an outdoor pool). I am limited by swim meets and thunderstorms or else I'd be out there every day. I really enjoy it. I can't wait until May when it opens again!

Swimming is a great way to get fit, but nothing beats a good healthy diet for losing weight.

Make sure you don't overdo it right off the bat.

I love swimming and last year signed up at Axiom for the pool. I started swimming laps and before too long, was up to swimming 36 laps/72 lengths (somewhere around a mile) in about 60 minutes. Then I started getting pain in my left shoulder/neck. Before long, I couldn't even lift my arm above 90 degrees. 6 months later, I have recovered to the point that I have full range of motion in my arm, but still have pain sometimes. I have not gone back to swimming yet.

In retrospect, I wish I had started slower, and not tried to push so hard so fast.

However, when I was swimming, I did feel better, and was losing weight.

This is true! I didn't add that while I was swimming, I really watched what I ate. The swimming makes me very hungry and the natural tendency is to eat... so make it lean, but filling stuff: lean proteins like fish and chicken and lots and lots of fresh veggies and fruit to "fill the hole." It always goes so well in the summer too because I can get fresh stuff from the roadside stands.

I used the app. My fitness pal to lose weight before love it. You simply scan in your food and it tracks everything you eat. It's really cool.
