I'm 23 and I haven't exercised since I was 18. In the past I did swimming, handball, soccer and horse riding.

I'm in no way overweight or anything similar. I've got an average body, 5'10 and 166 pounds.

However, I've noticed I get tired easily these days, even from climbing up stairs. Sometimes I feel a very sharp pain in my knees as well.

I'm planning on joining a gym this summer, would it be advisable to see a doctor first?

Don't you get a yearly physical? If not get one.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Should be visiting a doctor at least once a year even if you don't have any health issues. Its just the smart thing to do.

Gyms, companies that make exercise gear, online video tutorials, etc. always have that "see a doctor first" because their legal department demands it. It isn't for your safety, its for THEIR protection if you fall down dead while using their product/routine.

Isn't that a bit of a waste of time unless you're a senior? What would I say to the doctor? "Hello, I'm here because it's the start thing to do"?

Yeah, you're right dude. Don't bother with seeing a doctor OR a dentist until you are a senior. That's the way to go.

I go to the dentist every year because I wore braces for several years. But isn't it a bit stupid to go a doctor when you are so young? I'm sure even doctors find it a bit ridiculous.

No. You should go. You don't need every test, every year. But you need to visit regularly.

I'm 20 and I go the doctor, gynecologist and eye doctor (tmi) once a year for annual checkups/exams and I go to my dentist and dermatologist twice a year.

And before I actually began running and working out a few years ago I went to my doctor.

It's better to go now and catch early symptoms of something than to discover it later on when it's too late.
