Just curious what you think is harder to accomplish, 20 pull ups in a row or benchpressing your bodyweight 20 times in a row? I used 20 as a the standard number since that is the mark the army uses for pull ups in a fitness test. And I included benchpressing your bodyweight 20 times since almost every question people like to ask is 'how much can you benchpress' when you tell them you workout.

This question is just for fun but curious what you think is harder overall to do in a row.

Man that's a tough call. I feel 20 pull-ups are actually easier for a balanced person, but many male gym goers can bench a lot but are also pretty fat which makes the pull-ups harder.

I can do 20 wide grip pull-ups and probably bench my weight close to 20 times (I incline 20lbs more than my weight 10x)

The 20 reps of bench press are what make this a tough call. 20 pullups is pretty tough, I usually crap out around 14, although I'm sure I could work my way up to 20 if I really wanted to. Benching 215 for 20 reps, definitely can't do that right now I don't think. Haven't touched a bench press in years.

Depends on the person - the ratio of upper body to lower body, weight, etc. But probably pull-ups. Muscles used for bench press are generally stronger than pullups.

I can do both but bench pressing my weight 20 times is probably a tad more difficult for me. It's very close though.

I agree, its close.

Personally, I can easily bench my own weight 20 times and can easily do 20 pull ups. But I think i would crap out on benching before pullups.

Is everyone who said they can do the pullups male? I'm female, and I've been able to bench my bodyweight for 20 reps (I think), but have never been able to come close to 20 pullups. Women just have a lot of less upper body strength compared to lower body strength than men (meaning we're pulling a heavier bottom half).

For me, the 20 pullups is MUCH easier. I can do 20 pullups unbroken but if I were to try 20 bodyweight bench presses no way. Part of it depends on what kind of shape a person is in. I am not a big bench press guy. I do more squats, deadlifts, cleans, etc. in addition to bodyweight exercises. Besides, bench pressing isnt conducive to my martial arts practice so I really dont even bother almost ever.

I think most women who are somewhat fit (i.e., not fattys) would have an easier time bench pressing their bodyweight than the pullups. Most women I know weigh in 100 lbs to 135 lbs range but unless they are the crossfit women who do tons of pullups, they will probably struggle more on the pullups than the presses.

It really just kinda depends on the person.

Wow, I give you props for being able to do 20 bodyweight benchpresses. How much do you weigh if you don't mind me asking? Not even sure if 0.5% of the female population could be able to do that. You are definitely in the minority.

And I'm sure most of the responses of posters who say they can do over 20 pull ups are men, since it does require a lot of upper body strength and it's really physically hard for females to do even 5 pull ups in a row. Not being sexist.

I'm able to do both but I find pull ups a bit more challenging. I imagine more men are able to do 20 pull ups in a row vs 20 bodyweight benchpresses.

For all the people who answered they could do 20 pull-ups - are they true pull-ups (overhand grip) and are they done with full extension at the bottom of the pull-up?

Doing a strict pull-up is much harder than doing one with bent or slightly bent elbows.

At 63, I can do 14 strict pull-ups, but no way can I bench press 185 x 20.
