Yep. With rowers its always a contest. Many are fighting for a seat in a boat (there are only 9 in an eight man boat - with most coxswains doing the same land workouts, and you can't substitute a rower mid-race)
Look at the physical condition of most oarsmen/oarswomen (even those over 50 years old) and you will know that rowing is one of the best all-round sports you can get involved in. (Cross Country Skiing and Swimming are the other two)
On a concept2 for someone that is not training for rowing, a 2:25 minute - 500 meter/split for twenty minutes is a good start. Don't worry about the damper settings, find a setting that you are comfortable with. Try to lower the split every and increase the length of workout every week.
But as I have said before, a Concept2 is enjoyable/efficient only when you learn proper technique - something that most gyms and health clubs don't/can't teach.
