as a rower on those really cold mornings (it can drop to 34 degrees in Southern California) I found athletic tights at big lots for $8. They work so well, that I bought 5 pairs.

Told other members at the club about them, and they also purchased them. For rowers, it's all about comfort and flexibility...

Men and women can wear whatever they want. Tights don't seem functional to me for either sex so I don't get why people wear them in the gym. Maybe if they are doing some heavy intense training for a sport. But hey, not my body not my problem.

These are usually to prevent chafing during heavy cardio workouts like running/biking.

Millenials (generally speaking) spend a lot more time working out their lower body than previous generations. I doubt the average Baby Boomer male or female was in the gym doing heavy squats and power cleans in the 70's unless they were training for a specific sport. Bigger and more muscular thighs tend to rub together and can create discomfort if you're using your legs in a constant, repetitive motion.
