Can you enjoy the benefits of exercise without the pain of exertion? The answer may one day be yes — just take a pill that tricks the muscles into thinking they have been working out furiously.
Researchers at the Salk Institute report they have found two drugs that do wonders for the athletic endurance of couch potato mice.
Just what benefits does one get from these drugs? According to the article, only possibly indurance with one drug and nothing with the other drug if exercise is not done.... so the whole part about "without effort" is bull.
Both drugs are performance enhancers.... that requires performance in the first place. HA!

Yeah but it would be good for those with illness Mike. If they could get more muscle tone from less exercise or effort that's a good thing for some people, particularly the frail or those with fatigue issues.
They should help people who are too frail to exercise...
There's already plenty of exercises like that in existence, but hey, why work if you can just pop another pill, right?...
I notice the article doesn't say anything about the other effects of exercise - cardiovascular, skin conditioning, weight loss, body shaping...will we have pills for those, too?
Oh, I forgot -the pills that don't already exist are supplemented with surgery.

Yeah, but Phil, supposing you could utilize them to increase and improve your muscle fitness if you are wheelchair bound? Or like my relative, simply wouldn't understand HOW to exercise, not to mention not be able to produce the kind of sustained or intensity of exercise required to strengthen muscle. With a minimum of exertion and possibly only simple exercise potentially muscle tone would come more readily and that would be an excellent tool for those people, particularly if it could increase their core body fitness.
My policy is to stay away from any drugs no matter what the manufacturers say. Just give me vitamins or natural herbal remedies prescribed by my Chinese acupuncturist. Those in conjunction with my daily road work and exercise routine and I good.

Sorry, Moon - I've spent 38 years in taijiquan - those arguments don't fly.
