...and I can't remember the last time I was so horribly underwhelmed by an exotic super car. I have to admit that I didn't like the car in pictures (starting with the awkward headlights and the adjacent vents) but I've always heard that the car is quite striking in person and it wouldn't be the first time that a car looks much better in person than it does in photos (I felt that way about the Hyundai Genesis coupe). I saw one on the road today in San Francisco and I still find it to be a very unattractive car. Ferrari has had many great designs that range from feminine to masculine and brutal (think Enzo) but they generally are great looking cars. The 458 is just a strange futuristic lump (and I find the Enzo and Lexus LFA attractive from a technical standpoint).
Judging from all the praise the car has received I understand that my opinion is in the minority but I thought I'd share.
I saw one at a Ferrari show last weekend. If someone parked it in my garage and tossed the keys on my kitchen table I think I could force myself to drive the thing around town.
Why so negative? lol it seems like a great car... but I wouldn't buy a Ferrari like that if everyone would try to steal it and then I'd probably drive it only on weekends or something lol like most people with Ferrari's.
IMHO, exotic super cars look amazing on the showroom floor, but on the roads and highways in the mist of larger cars and SUVs, exotic super cars look like small battery-powered cars 5 year olds drive. The 458 Italia is no different.
I don't think exotics look strange amongst other cars at all. They usually are quite eye catching even after seeing numerous Lamborghini's of the same type.
I saw a bright red 458 on Wilshire last week while crawling to the 405. I found it to be actually very understated but somehow the curves & headlights make it seem like a kit car or a modded Ferrari. In general I don't like the language design of Pininfarina, especially the boring California.
The 458 is the first mid engine Ferrari I've liked the looks of since the 355. Not quite as radical as the F40 (my favorite Ferrari newer than 1975), but to me, much better than the previous few attempts.
