Hello, I am going to Fairbanks on the last days of september... what are my chances of viewing the aurora?? I know it's unpredictable but in terms of weather... is it too cloudy to see them in those days?? I am taking some tours out of the city to have the chance of viewing them (if Im lucky enough), but still not sure about clouds...

Seeing the Northern Lights depends on 3 things:
Aurora activity, which is based on solar activity, which is random
Clear skies, which is based on weather, which is random
Dark skies, which you can control by being in Alaska when it's dark (ie, not the middle of summer) and getting away from any bright lights.

So you asked, is it too cloudy? That question can only be answered a day or so out. It could be clear, it could be cloudy, it could be dumping snow, it could 50 degrees out. It'll just depend on what weather system is over the area at that time.

If there is Auroras activity by mid September, and if the sky is clear, you should be able to see some Auroras at night, usually from 10:00 PM to perhaps 4:00 AM.

My wife and I flew out of Fairbanks at midnight Sept. 11. There was dense cloud cover, but when the plane broke out of the clouds there they were. Just like the fantastic pictures we have seen. On the ground we could see them through the clouds but very faintly. Mainly a greenish glow. But that airplane ride was worth every penny. Wonderful, fantastic don't come close to covering the sight. Hope you saw them.

Hopefully you'll have a rental car. That'll allow you the most flexibility in staying out late enough to see them.
