My mother likes to remind people that our first year in Alaska- Juneau- it snowed 12 inches on April 1, and naturally this was on top of an existing snow cover. Even coming from Minnesota, it was a depressing event for her.

My old metric for the end of winter in SE was Earth day, as temps would have warmed a bit and the snow would have receded
enough to start collecting fire wood again. The last several years this has gone out the window, as spring is coming much earlier. Even this year, with March being the snowiest month of the winter, spring is earlier than "back in the day".

In years past, perhaps May 1989, I drove the Parks Highway, and by Healy there were several inches of snow on the road, plus lots of snow coming down.

It's officially been summer for at least two weeks now. There's like 15 something hours of daylight and we've had a steady streak of clear skies with more to come. All (ok almost ) the snow is gone and the mud is even pretty much dried up. I've seen flies, Mosquitos, spiders and some other various bugs. Now I remember why I live in this godforsaken place .

Lots of snow on the ground around Fairbanks, and last week was a little warmer than this week. Still gets down to the 20's at night, and then up to the lower 30's and 40's during the day. The forecast is for 50 degrees by the weekend.

The wind, Ray... you forgot the wind!! Grr!

My driveway is still frozen, but I keep wearing XtraTuffs, hoping it will inspire the mud to make an appearance.

Forgot about the wind And yes, it has been quite windy. The trees moving around keep on turning the nightlight ON several times during the dark hours. I had to turn it off, so now the dog instead-keeps an eye and ear open at night.

March and late September are my favorite times of the year for taking photos of the Auroras, but this year I haven't been out there very much
I dont blame ya.....Dont worry Ray,in the next couple weeks you will see temps around +10 or higher.... Excellent weather to take photographs!
